FRIDAY NOTE (9/26/14)

Events of the Week:  Our theme this week was Colors.  Our big book for the week was Rain.  We focused on naming the parts of a book (front cover, back cover and title page).  We learned the songs for the colors brown, purple, orange, and black.  Your child should be able to recognize and read the words red, green, blue, yellow, purple, orange, brown, and black.  Our predictable chart was “I like ____.” (I like purple.)  The sight word we learned was “like”.  We continued our letter study by learning the letters Cc and Hh.  Each week we are learning to identify and write new letters, along with learning the sound each letter makes.  In math, we completed our unit on measurement.  We have been using math words, such as length, longest, shortest, height, taller, capacity, weight and so on.  Ask your child to put your family members in order from tallest to shortest.

Reading Challenge!

Don’t forget to be completing the reading challenge logs!  To earn a homerun your student must complete all four reading logs by the end of first quarter.

Keep up the hard work!

IR Time (Independent Reading)

Has your child said anything about IR time?  Over the last four weeks we have been practicing reading independently in our classroom.  During IR time your child picks a special reading place around the classroom to read.  While reading at home with your child ask them what they are doing during IR time (looking for sight words, letters we’ve learned, spaces between words, ending marks & capital letters).  This week we learned to make a prediction about what the book will be about by looking at the front cover.  We also learned that the pictures in the book tell a story and that the words in the book match the pictures.  These are great skills that you can work on with your child while reading at home each night.  Independent Reading time is one of our favorite times of the day.  J

Next Week:

·        We will continue to learn about the color words.

·        We will read Mouse Paint and other color books.

·        In math, we will continue our unit on measurement.

·        In writing, we will start putting our thoughts into our journal.

Friday Note 9-12-14

Events of the Week: This week we read The Pledge of Allegiance and learned about our flag. We learned our school pledge and talked about respect. The letters “Tt” and “Gg” were our letters of the week.  We worked on identifying each letter, the sound it makes, and practiced writing it.  In math we finished our unit on position and location of shapes.

We are starting to work on reciting our phone numbers, addresses, and birthdays.   Please practice with your child at home on these.   These will be on the grade card when I assess your child in October.

SIGHTWORDS
Has your child said anything about sight words??  In kindergarten, we learn sight words.  These are common words that tend to “pop up” all over the place.  By mastering words, such as our sight words, children become more fluent readers.  Also, it is so much fun to see the boys and girls get excited when they find a sight word in a book and can read it!  These are the sight words we have learned so far.  Your child should be able to read each of these words.  Please practice them at home with your child.

Snack Time

Dear Parents,

We have decided to have a snack around 10:30 each morning since we do not go to lunch until 12:10.  This is making for a very long (and hungry) morning time.  We are asking for donations for snack time.  If you are able to send in snacks for the class, it would be very much appreciated.  We are asking for healthy items for the whole class (pretzels, animal crackers, applesauce, granola bars, trail mix, apples, graham crackers, etc.).  We have 20 students.  Please do not send in items that will need to be refrigerated.  If you send an item that requires a spoon, please provide enough plastic spoons for the class.  Also, we will not be drinking milk with our snack.  We will be using our classroom water fountain.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Thank you,

The Kindergarten Teachers
