Friday Note 2/06/15
This Week: In math we finished the
unit on subtraction. We will continue to
learn about addition and subtraction in the coming weeks. We continued working on our shared research
and writing project over walruses. Our sight word this week
was “they”.
·
Language
Workshop— We did some additional
research on walruses. We also enjoyed watching
video clips of walruses in the arctic. We
reviewed the list of facts about walruses that we wrote last week. The kids insisted on adding a few more facts
this week.
·
Writing
Workshop—As a class, we used the walrus facts to write a short informational story.
Our class story is coming home Monday.
Please read it with your child.
I’m sure he/she will have plenty more facts to add to it! J The boys and girls also did some informational writing
on their own this week.
·
Reading
Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently, I
am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills. During independent reading time, students are
practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their
reading strategies. I hope that you are
able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you
at home.
·
Word
Study— We did a lot of sight word building and writing, using our magnetic
letters and white boards. The students
need to be able to both read and write all of the sight words correctly.

Message from Mrs. Wallin:
As we
continue to progress in our literacy efforts at Clever Schools, we have
attended many conferences with some of the leading authors and researchers in
the field. Every book I've read and every speaker I have heard always
emphasizes the importance of “volume reading”. We have heard over and over
that the more a student reads, the more success they have in their overall
school achievement.
One of the
ways we are trying to accomplish more “volume reading” is with the
implementation of our Quarterly Reading Challenges. This quarter we are
“Reading for a Slam Dunk” and each student has been given the criteria to meet
this challenge. Those students who meet the challenge this quarter will
be entered into a prize drawing, receive an extra recess AND a special school
assembly! Please take a moment to read the attached brochure which outlines the
importance of reading at home and we beg you to encourage reading at home.
It’s not too
late…there are 22 school days left in the quarter! Congratulations to the
students who have already placed their name on the “Wall of Fame” for the
quarter. I hope to see EVERYONE represented by March 6th!
Thank you for
your continued support at home,
Mrs. Wallin
Sight
Words—Keep practicing!
I is like

and are they
It
might be a good idea to mix these up and practice out of order. Several
students are able to just recite them in order but unable to read them alone.
Library
Books
Remember to take care of the
library books while they are at your house!
A good idea
is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being
read. Library books are due back each Thursday, so your child can check out a
new book.
Next
Week:
·
We will learn
about the universe.
·
We will continue
to learn about addition and subtraction.
·
Our
sight word will be “in”.
·
We will practice
identifying the ending sound in words.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Wenger
