Friday Note

Friday Note: April 24, 2015

Events of the Week: This week we started an Author Study on Laura Numeroff.
  • Language Workshop: We read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie the first part of the week and identified the characters and setting.  We practiced retelling the story using our story map.  We finished off the week reading If You Take a Mouse to School.  We identified the characters and setting in the story.  Today, we compared the two books and wrote our very own letter to the mouse.
  • Writing Workshop: We introduced series of events writing.  We spent the week sequencing events in the right order and discussing that in order for our writing to make sense it has to be written in the correct order.  We practiced this by writing a whole group paper sequencing the events of eating birthday cake at a party.  On Wednesday, we wrote about a girl getting ready to go out in the rain.  Please look at this paper with your child and have them read it to you.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am beginning to call each student up to read with them independently to determine their end of year reading level.
  • Word Study: We spent the week building words. We reviewed the sounds each vowel makes.
  • Math: We spent the week doing math centers.  During math centers, I worked with small groups on different math skills.  If your child brought a math assessment home this week please look over it and continue to work on the necessary skills to reach proficiency.

Important Dates:
    • April 27-30- Parent-Teacher Conferences

From Mrs. Wallin

Attention Parents:

We are experiencing exciting times in the way of expansion in student activities and athletics at Clever Schools.  If you haven’t been by to see our newly expanded sports complex on the High School campus, you need to check it out!  However as we experience this growth, we have growing pains in the area of transportation.  We are in desperate need of bus drivers to transport students to away games, competitions, etc.  If you have any interest in driving a bus, an application can be found online at the following link or can be picked up in the Central Office.  For more information contact John Cackley at 417-221-7812.

Friday Note 4-17-2015

Friday Note: April 17, 2015

Don’t forget- Art Night is tonight! (5:30-8:30)

Events of the Week: This week our unit was on animals and their babies.  We talked about various animal mommies and their babies and discussed ways in which animal parents care for their young- just like our mommies and daddies care for us!
  • Language Workshop: We read several books about animals and their young.  We completed a book Mother, Mother Can you Find Me? to put in our Reading Boxes for independent reading later.
  • Writing Workshop: We reviewed opinion writing.  We began by doing a pre-writing activity where each child lists his/her opinion and then gives two reasons for this opinion.  From there, we transferred this writing to another paper for a final draft.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study: We introduced antonyms (opposites).  Most kindergarten students have a firm grasp of this concept already, but it was fun to play games with opposites and talk about sets of opposites that we had not thought about before.
  • Math: We finished a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19.  Each day we practiced breaking the numbers down into a set of 10 and left over ones.  Please look over your child’s math work mats with them to support what we are learning in our classroom.

Important Dates:
    • April 24 – Cox CARE Mobile

Friday Note: April 10, 2015
Events of the Week: Our theme was plants. We planted flowers and vegetables in our classroom garden!
  • Language Workshop: We continued reading books about plants.  We made our own plant artwork and labeled their parts and needs.
  • Writing Workshop: We continued writing about plants.  We are working on writing complete sentences that describe or tell, instead of “I like…” sentences.  Continue encouraging your child to write at home!

  • Math: We began a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19.  Each day we practiced breaking the numbers down into a set of 10 and left over ones.  Please look over your child’s math work mats with them to support what we are learning in our classroom.

Events of the Week: Our theme was plants. On Friday we had our Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks for the donations. The students had a great time.

Language Workshop: We read different books about plants and talked about what plants need to grow. We also discussed the parts of a plant.

Writing Workshop: We wrote sentences about plants. We wrote about the parts of a plant and what they need to grow.  We are working on adding detail to our writing.  Our sentence writing is getting better every day!  Continue to practice writing sentences at home.

Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.

Word Study: Each day we practiced building simple words.  We practiced changing the beginning, middle, and ending sounds to make new words.

Math: We finished our unit called Composing Numbers 11 to 19.  For each number, we are putting that many counters in ten frames.  Then we are figuring out the parts that make up each number (such as one set of 10 plus 5 leftover ones equal 15).  Please look over your child’s math page each night and continue to practice this skill at home.
