Friday Note

FRIDAY NOTE (9/25/15)

Events of the Week:

Math: In math, we completed our unit on measurement.  We have been using math words, such as length, longest, shortest, height, taller, capacity, weight and so on.  Ask your child to put your family members in order from tallest to shortest.

Language Workshop:  Our theme this week was Colors.  Our big book for the week was Rain.  We’ve been focusing on naming the parts of a book (front cover, back cover and title page).  We also have been learning to name the jobs of both the author (writes the words) and illustrator (draws the pictures).  Look for these assessments in your child’s folder.  As always, if he/she is not proficient in these skills, then please practice them at home because I will reassess at least one more time before the end of the quarter.

Reading Workshop:  We continued our unit over reading routines.  This week we focused on reading with a buddy.  We colored and then read simple color books with predictable text (The blue bird.) together and afterwards shared our favorite part of the book.  We added these books to our book boxes so that we can reread them independently.

Writing Workshop:  Our predictable chart was “I like ____.” (I like purple.)  The sight word we learned was “like”.

Word Study:  We continued our letter study by learning the letters Cc and Hh.  We worked on identifying each letter, writing it correctly and saying its sound.

Reading Workshop:  We continued our unit over reading routines.  This week we learned that the pictures in a book help tell the story and that the pictures match the words.  We also introduced our book boxes. Students are able to look at the books they keep in their box during rest time.

Writing Workshop:  Since we have now finished learning about our classmates by playing the Name Game, we focused on writing our names correctly.  When practicing at home, please make sure the first letter is capitalized and the rest are lowercase.  *Name homework is coming home today.  Please read the directions carefully!  The students also sorted letters to determine which letters are in their name and which letters are not.

Word Study:  Our sight word for this week was “my”.  The letters “Nn” and “Pp” were our letters of the week.  We worked on identifying each letter, writing it correctly, and saying its sound.
