Friday Note

FRIDAY NOTE (10/30/2015)
Events of the Week:  Wow, how time flies!  I can’t believe it is already the end of October!

Math In math, we worked on counting, reading and writing numbers 6 to 10.

Language Workshop This week we finished our author study on Mercer Mayer.  We read his series of books about finding unusual things in hidden places around the house (There’s a Nightmare in my Closet, There’s Something in my Attic, There’s an Alligator Under my Bed, and There are Monsters Everywhere.)  With each book we discussed and wrote about story elements (characters, setting, and sequence of events).  We also compared these books and talked about ways that they are similar and different.

Reading Workshop We began learning about the expectations for Literacy Centers when the teacher is working with small groups.  We also read the predictable reader I can.  We discussed how we can look at the picture when trying to read an unknown word.  Each child received their own copy so that they can add it to their book boxes to read independently later.

Writing Workshop Our sight word was “be”.  We practiced it by using it in the predictable chart, “For Halloween, I will be ____.”

Word Study We learned about the letters “Vv” and “Xx”.  Don’t forget to practice letter and sound identification with your child at home.

Content Workshop We read several Halloween books.  On Friday, we had our Halloween Party!  Thanks to everyone who helped make our party a big success!

Friday Note

Events of the Week:

Math:  We started a unit on comparing and ordering numbers 0 to 5.  We learned the meaning of the words more than, greater, less than, and fewer.

Language Workshop:  This was Fire Safety Week.  We learned what steps we should take in case there was ever a fire in our homes or at school.  Thank you for taking the time to complete the Fire Safety Plan with your child!  We practiced how to STOP, DROP and ROLL in the event that our clothing should catch fire.  We read different books and talked about how firefighters are our friends.  On Wednesday, the Clever Fire Department came and spoke to us about the importance of fire safety.  We got to see the fire truck up close and crawl through the smoke house to practice what to do in a real fire!  Be sure to check the batteries in your smoke alarm!

Reading Workshop: This week during IR time I continued reading with students individually checking their understanding of concepts of print.  I’m using a level A text with sight words they should know (Ex: I see crayons.).  I am asking your child questions such as, “Can you show me where to begin reading?” “How many words are in that sentence?” “Where would you read next?” “Can you point to an ending mark?”.  I’m also looking to see if they are using the picture for clues.  I am so impressed with their understanding of concepts of print at this point of the year!

Writing Workshop:  This week we completed our scarecrow unit.  As a class, we worked together on writing.  The first day we labeled our scarecrow.  The second day we added descriptive words, and the third day we wrote sentences about our scarecrow.  We put these sentences together to write a story.

Word Study: Our sight word was “he”.  We learned about the letters “Jj” and “Ww”.  Don’t forget to practice letter and sound identification with your child at home.

Content Workshop:  We read a variety of fall and fire safety books.

Friday Note 10-9-15

No school on Monday!!

Events of the WeekWe’ve had a busy week learning a lot of new things!  Our theme this week was fall.  We learned about informational books (nonfiction) by reading several books about fall.  We noticed that informational books usually have a table of contents, an index, a glossary, and photographs instead of drawings.  After reading informational books, we made a list of important details that we learned about fall.  We paid special attention to the changes that are happening all around us.  Our sight word was “it”.  During our interactive writing workshop, we made a book called “It is Fall”.  Please have your child touch read the book to you.  We also learned about the letters “Kk” and “Ll”.  Don’t’ forget to practice letter and sound identification with your child at home.  Flash cards made from index cards are a great way to practice.  In math, we counted and wrote numbers 1-5.  Please practice writing these numbers with your child at home.

Reading Workshop:  This week during IR time I started reading with students individually checking their understanding of concepts of print.  I’m using a level A text with sight words they should know (Ex: I See.).  I am asking your child questions such as, “Can you show me where to begin reading?” “How many words are in that sentence?” “Where would you read next?” “Can you point to an ending mark?”.  I’m also looking to see if they are using the picture for clues.

Friday Note

Events of the Week

Math:  We started a new math topic over numbers 1-5.  Please practice writing these numbers at home with your child.

Language Workshop: Our focus this week was on color review.   Our book for the week was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.  We read and practiced retelling this story using our story wheels.  We also made our own “Brown Bear Reader” to add to our Independent Reading boxes.

Reading Workshop:  This week during IR time I started reading with students individually checking their understanding of concepts of print.  I’m using a level A text with sight words they should know (Ex: I see apples.).  I am asking your child questions such as, “Can you show me where to begin reading?” “How many words are in that sentence?” “Where would you read next?” “Can you point to an ending mark?”.  I’m also looking to see if they are using the picture for clues.

Writing Workshop:  Each day we wrote a sentence from the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?.  As a class we set at the carpet with a clipboard and talked about what we were going to write for the day.  Once we decided what our sentence was we counted the number of words in the sentence.  We used sight words and color words to complete the sentence.  After writing each word we would go back and reread to figure out the next word in the sentence.  Once the sentence was complete, students went back to their seats to draw a picture to match the sentence.  We call this process “Interactive Writing”.  Your child should be able to read each page to you independently.

Word Study: Our sight word was “see”.  It popped up a lot in our reading and writing this week.  We practiced building “see” with magnetic letters and writing it correctly.  Our letters for the week were “Ff” and “Dd”.  Don’t forget to practice letter and sound identification at home with your child.

Content Workshop:  We did several different color mixing experiments.  Be sure to ask your child about the different activities we completed.  What a fun way to end our day each day!
