What do the teachers do on Fridays after the students go home???

Every Friday Clever students are dismissed early to allow time for teacher collaboration.  After students leave for the day, district faculty assembles together to learn and work to better the education of our students.  Teachers have learned new ways to implement technology, new teaching strategies, and how to better serve our students.
The Kindergarten team has focused on letter identification since the beginning of the year.  Each teacher gathered data during the first few weeks of school.  At that time, 18 kindergarten students (20%) were able to identify all upper and lower case letters.  The kindergarten teachers collaborated with other members of our team, which includes our preschool teacher, a Parents as Teachers Home Educator, a Speech Therapist, and reading specialists, on ways to help our students learn their letters.  After two quarters of instruction we are happy to report 81 students (88%) can identify all their letters!  An additional 10 students (11%) are very close to meeting our goal!  Our class had only three students in August who could identify all 52 letters, but at the December break we had 15 students who reached our goal!  What wonderful improvement!
The kindergarten team will be focusing on student reading in the coming quarters!  Keep reading at home to help your child reach proficiency in their reading!

Library Books
Your child brought home a library books on Thursday.  Remember to take care of the library books while they are at your house!  A good idea is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being read.  Library books are due back each Thursday, so your child can check out a new book.

A message from Mrs. Carlson:
Your child probably brought information home this week regarding our annual Library Magazine Drive.    Thank you for taking time to read the letter that was enclosed in the packet.  This annual event along with our fall book fair help us raise funds with which to purchase books for our library.   One of the easiest and most direct methods of placing subscriptions is online.  The letter gave you instructions of how to set up an ‘online store’ for your child.   If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Carlson, our librarian at carlsonk@clever.k12.mo.us Your child can return their magazine orders as soon as you are finished, but the official deadline is Friday, January 29th.

Reading Challenge
Thank you to all of the parents that read with your child this week and returned their book bag and logs today.  If you did, then your child is coming home with new books in their book bags today.  If you did not, please return these on Tuesday so that your child can get new books and can continue to work towards earning the January Pizza Hut Book-It coupon.

Cold Weather

Just a reminder that we do go outside for recess, even on cold days. Please make sure your child brings the appropriate coats, hat and gloves to school each day.  If you are missing coats or jackets, you may want to check the lost and found "fence" located by the office.  Also as a reminder, children are only allowed to stay in from recess if we have a written note from the doctor stating that they need to stay inside during recess.

Thank you so much for sharing your child with me.  I hope you have a blessed and joyous Christmas!
See you in the New Year!
