Events
of the Week:
Our theme
was spring. We spent the week learning
about how the season affects plants, animals, and people.
Language Workshop: This week we read
informational books about spring. The
students wrote about key details they learned from the books. We discussed the changes we are seeing
outside. We learned about the weather
changes in spring and how the behavior of animals and people change as
well.
Writing
Workshop: We
looked at several spring pictures. We
labeled the pictures and wrote sentences about what was in each picture. We are working on adding detail to our
writing. Our sentence writing is getting
better every day! Continue to practice
writing sentences at home.
Reading
Workshop: We
took our Spring NWEA test. We will talk about the results at parent teacher
conferences.
Word Study: We practiced making words
from other words. (example: Change pig to wig)
Math:
We started a new unit called Composing Numbers 11 to
19. For each number, we are putting that
many counters in ten frames. Then we are
figuring out the parts that make up each number (such as one set of 10 plus 5
leftover ones equal 15). Please look over your child’s math
page each night and continue to practice this skill at home.

From Mrs. Wallin
Dear Parents:
Many of you may have already
heard about this through the grapevine, but I wanted to send an official
correspondence to let you know about an upcoming change in the district. A
while back, I was approached about a position at my church, Crossway Baptist
Church. I was not seeking to change
careers at this point in my life, but after much prayer and consideration I
know that this is where I’m supposed to finish my career. I will be serving as the Director of
Preschool & Nursery Ministry beginning July 1st.
This has been an extremely
difficult decision for my family as it will require us to leave a district and
community that we have grown to adore throughout my 21 years in Clever. Our oldest daughter will graduate this year
and I couldn’t be more pleased with the education she has received here. Our youngest three daughters will finish out
in Springfield Public Schools and I’m sure it will be wonderful but it won’t be
Clever L
The great news is that we have
hired a tremendous Principal to take my place in the fall. Renee Ramey will be
joining us with 12 years of classroom experience as an educator and facilitator
of learning. Throughout the interview
process, one of the things that impressed us the most was her constant focus on
student growth and continuous improvement.
Several of our teachers served on the interview committee and helped us
narrow down the selection and we were all in agreement that Mrs. Ramey will be
a positive asset to the Clever School District.
Over the last several months I
have had the opportunity to reflect on my years in the district and I feel so
honored and privileged to have been a part of this community that values
education. There are so many amazing
things happening here and I look forward to hearing about the journey forward
in the years to come.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shelly Wallin

Events
of the Week:
Our theme
was weather. We spent the week learning
about different types of weather. The
student’s that earned their 3rd quarter reading journey enjoyed going
to different classrooms today to read.
Everyone had a great time dressing up as their favorite book
character. What a fun way to end 3rd
quarter!
Math:
We worked in math centers to review addition and
subtraction. During this time I pulled
small groups to work on these skills. Please
continue to work on these skills at home since switching between the two is
often difficult in kindergarten. Remind your
child to pay extra close attention to the + and – to know which
operation they need to use.
Language
Workshop: Each day we focused on a different type of
weather. We read different informational
books as well as fiction books about weather.
Writing Workshop: We
wrote an opinion piece about our favorite play center. Please look over your child’s writing and
continue to practice at home. We wrote
an opinion piece about our favorite type of weather.
Reading Workshop: We read the book, How
is the Weather Today? as a class all week.
We found the sight words in the book and practiced using our reading
strategies to figure out unknown words.
This book was a harder level then I use in reading groups and they did
such a great job reading it. I am so proud
of each of them!
Word Study: We practiced making –at
words such as cat, hat, bat, that and flat on our whiteboards.

Events
of the Week:
Our theme
this week was Dr. Seuss. We read a few Dr. Seuss books, including The Cat in the Hat, The Sleep Book, Wacky
Wednesday, Green Eggs and Ham, and more.
We also had a lot of fun eating green eggs and ham that we made and dressing up during the week! Finally, we were busy with third quarter
assessments.
Math:
In math we reviewed addition and subtraction. Please continue to work on this skill at home
since switching between the two is often difficult in kindergarten. Remind them to pay extra close attention to
the + and – to know which operation they need to use. I also assessed making ten and decomposing
numbers in more than one way. If your child is still having trouble with
these skills, please practice at home. I will reassess next week.
Writing Workshop: We
practiced writing an opinion piece together as a class using a graphic
organizer to help us prepare our thoughts.
An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or more). The first sentence states an opinion (I like
green eggs and ham). The next two (or
more) sentences give reasons why. The students then wrote an individual piece
using the same organizer and then transferred their writing to paragraph form.
Reading Workshop: Students are working daily
in Literacy Centers. While students are
working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different
reading skills. During independent
reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small
groups and using their reading strategies.
I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when
they are reading with you at home.
Word Study: We enjoyed finding the
silly rhyming words in the Dr. Seuss books and completing activities involving
word families (for example, the -at family consists of words like cat, bat, mat, sat, etc).
