NO SCHOOL TOMORROW FOR KINDERGARTNERS!
Events of the Week: This week we continued our author study on Laura Numeroff.
  • Language Workshop: We read more “If You Give” books, including If You Give a Pig a Party, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, and If You Take a Mouse to School.  We continued to discuss story elements, cause and effect, and retelling events in order.  Our class focused on If You Give a Pig a Pancake.  We wrote about the book and did a fun art project.  Be sure to check these out in our hallway!
  • Writing Workshop: We continued our series of events writing.  We wrote about getting ready to come to school each day.  First, the students helped me to write about how I get ready and come to school.  Then, the students each wrote about how they each get ready in the mornings.  We are focusing on putting the events in the correct order and making sure our writing makes sense.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am having each student read to me independently to determine their end of year reading level.
  • Word Study: This week we focused on suffixes.  We learned about how these can change the meaning of a word.  We added added –s, -ed-, and –ing to the ending of words.
  • Math: We continued our unit on solid figures (cylinder, cone, cube, and sphere).  We were able to analyze, compare, and compose shapes. The students enjoyed experimenting with solid shapes to determine which ones can stack, slide, and roll.

Important Dates:

o   April 29:  NO SCHOOL FOR KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS! (K screening)
o   May 4:  Kindergarten Field Trip (J.R. Martin Park in Republic then to the Dickerson Park Zoo)

Summer Activities… Over the next couple of weeks, we have several fun outdoor activities planned for the kindergartners.  It would be a good idea to send your child in tennis shoes each day.

No School Tomorrow!
Thank you for coming to our conference this week! I enjoyed visiting with each of you.
Events of the Week: This week we started an Author Study on Laura Numeroff.

  • Language Workshop: We read If You Give a Mouse a Cookie the first part of the week and identified the characters and setting.  We also practiced retelling the story.  We finished off the week reading If You Give a Dog a Donut and If You Give a Moose a Muffin. The students enjoyed comparing the stories.

·          Writing Workshop: We introduced series of events writing.  We spent the week sequencing events in the right order and discussing that in order for our writing to make sense it has to be written in the correct order.

  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am beginning to call each student up to read with them independently to determine their end of year reading level.

  • Word Study: We spent the week building sight words with magnetic letters and writing them.  We are working very hard on making our words easy to read and writing them correctly in the lines.

  • Math: We began a unit on solid figures (cylinder, cone, cube, and sphere).  The students enjoyed learning about these new shapes and finding them in our classroom.

Friday Note

Friday Note: April 15, 2016

Events of the Week: This week our unit was on animals and their babies.  We talked about various animal mommies and their babies and discussed ways in which animal parents care for their young- just like our mommies and daddies care for us!
  • Language Workshop: We read several books about animals and their young.  We completed a book Mother, Mother Can you Find Me? to put in our Reading Boxes for independent reading later.
  • Writing Workshop: We reviewed opinion writing.  Our writing this week was on our favorite animal. We began by doing a pre-writing activity where each child lists his/her opinion and then gives two reasons for this opinion.  From there, we transferred this writing to another paper for a final draft.
  • Word Study: We introduced antonyms (opposites).  Most kindergarten students have a firm grasp of this concept already, but it was fun to play games with opposites and talk about sets of opposites that we hadn’t thought about before.
  • Math: We finished a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19.  Each day we practiced breaking the numbers down into a set of 10 and left over ones.

Friday Note

Friday Note: April 8, 2016
Art Night is held in the 5-8 portion of the Elemiddle TONIGHT from 5:30pm-8:30pm! For $10 students can participate in all activities! We will be making African inspired drums, rattles, mask, tie dye ts and even clay!

Events of the Week: Our theme was plants. We planted flowers and vegetables in our classroom garden!
  • Language Workshop: We continued reading books about plants.  We made our own plant artwork and labeled their parts and needs.
  • Writing Workshop: We are working on writing complete sentences that describe or tell, instead of “I like…” sentences.  Continue encouraging your child to write at home!
  • Word Study: We did a mini PBL (Project Based Learning) lesson that had to do with building something out of boxes.  We read one book a day that had something to do with constructing, using your imagination, creating ideas, etc.  After each book we would discuss as a class how we could make a self-to-text connection.  Students would work in groups throughout the week brainstorming ideas, making a supply list, and coming up with a plan with their group members.  On Friday I surprised students by informing them we actually get to put all their ideas to the test.  Each group made something out of various boxes by using the plans they had been working on all week.  I am so proud of how hard and well they worked together.  They loved all of the hands on learning and learned so much from one another.
  • Math: We began a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19.  Each day we practiced breaking the numbers down into a set of 10 and left over ones.

Important Dates:
