Friday Note 1-27-17

Friday Note 1/27/16

This Week:  We started off the week by celebrating the 100th day on Monday followed by the 101st day with a Dalmatian Celebration on Tuesday.  What a fun way to begin our week!

  • Math—We practiced counting to 100 (by ones, fives, and tens) for our 100th day celebration!  We learned to use a hundreds chart and worked on some fun 100 day activities!  We read several 100 day books during math.  On Wednesday, we started a new math topic over writing number sentences.

  • Language Workshop—We did some additional research on Walruses.  We reviewed the list of facts about Walruses that we wrote last week.  The class insisted on adding a few more facts this week.

  • Writing Workshop—As a class, we are using the Walrus facts to write a short informational paper.  I’m sure he/she will have plenty more information to share with you!
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study—We focused on syllable segmenting and blending this week.  We practiced by counting the number of syllables in our names, food items from the kitchen center, and playing a Smartboard game.  We also practiced blending the syllables to make a word (ex. /jel/ /ly/ /fish/).  Please work with your child on this skill at home.  I will assess over syllables next week.

Friday Note

Friday Note 1/20/17

This Week:

  • Math-  We continued the unit on joining groups (addition).  We introduced + (plus sign) and = (equal sign).  Your child should now be able to write and solve simple addition problems.  We also discussed what a “sum” is and strategies (drawing pictures, using counters or other manipulates, counting on, etc.) for solving addition problems.

  • Language Workshop— We spent the week researching walruses.  We read a variety of books and used many resources to help us find facts (PebbleGO, Kids World Book Online, National Geographic Kids, various websites, etc.).  As we gathered information on walruses, we wrote a list of facts about them.  Next week, we’ll write an informational paper as a class about them.
  • Writing Workshop— We continued working on writing complete sentences.  We practiced writing sentences and then cutting those sentences into separate words and then gluing them back into the correct order again.  We differentiated a word from a sentence and then worked on making one word into a sentence (ex. if a child is given the word “house”, he/she may write “I live in a tan house.”)  Your child should be able to tell you the components of a good sentence (begins with a capital letter, ends with a punctuation mark, includes finger spacing between words, and unknown words are “stretched out” (spelled phonetically.  For example, “boat” = “bot”.)
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study— We continued to focus on rhyming this week. Please continue to practice at home.  Your child should be able to identify if two words rhyme, as well as be able to produce a word that rhymes with a given word.

Important Dates:
  • January 20: Little Cheer Performance (during the varsity half-time at around 7:30pm)
  • Feb 10: Valentines Party (more details to come)
  • Feb. 14:  Jump Rope for Heart form and money due
  • Feb. 17:  Jump Rope for Heart

Little Cheer Performance
2 parents/guardians will get in for free with a little cheer participant. Also, all elementary kids will get in for free that night.  If someone that is not a parent is coming for only the performance, they will not be charged. Seniors 55+ are free.  Regular admission is $2 for students and $3.00 for adults.

Book Bags
Keep reading and returning the book bags every Friday.  Also, please encourage your child to read these books several times before returning them (you only have to log them once). It would be best if you are reading the books each night.  Please take care of these books while they are at your house as they belong to our classroom.

little Cheer Pickup

As you may know, little cheer pickup last evening was very congested. In an effort to help reduce this congestion, we are asking all parents to use the bus lane tonight and tomorrow night. In order to do this, you will need to go south on Public Ave. then west on Inman St. and enter the bus lane from the south. Once in the bus lane, please form two lines that will wrap around the front of the K-4 building where students may be picked up. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Thanks

100th Day of School News

 100th Day of School!!!!!

On Monday January 23rd, we will be celebrating the 100th Day of School!  As a fun way to celebrate this special day, please dress your child as a 100-year-old (clothing, hair, etc.)!  Have fun and be creative!

In order to help the children develop an understanding of the concept of this large number, we will be having 100’s Day!  We will be doing many activities on day.  For one of the activities, each child needs to bring 100 of something to share.  It does not need to be expensive.  The items need to be small and must be in a baggie or sealed container.  We’ll be using our math skills in an exciting way that the children are sure to enjoy!

Here are some suggestions of items to bring:

toothpicks          seeds               rice                  Cheerios
beans                 buttons            M&M’s              paper
yarn                  pennies             macaroni           Skittles
cereal               paper clips          Q-Tips             marshmallows

As you can see, the possibilities are endless!  To help make this process easier for your child, please make sure your child brings EXACTLY 100 items—no more, no less.

Thank you for your help and know that your child will have a great time learning about the number 100!  Please send in the items to school by Thursday, January 19th.
