Friday Note 3-31-17

Friday Note - 3-31-17
Events of the Week: Our theme was 5 senses.  We completed our NWEA testing. Our sight word was “was”.

Language Workshop: We read different books about our five senses. We talked about things we can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel.

Writing Workshop: We practiced writing sentences in our journals.

Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.

Word Study: Each day we practiced building and spelling simple words.  We practiced changing the beginning, middle, and ending sounds to make new words.

Math: We finished our unit called Composing Numbers 11 to 19.  For each number, we are putting that many counters in ten frames.  Then we are figuring out the parts that make up each number (such as one set of 10 plus 5 leftover ones equal 15).  Please look over your child’s math page each night and continue to practice this skill at home.

Events of the Week: Our theme was spring.  We spent the week learning about how the season affects plants, animals and people.

Math: We started a new unit called Composing Numbers 11 to 19.  For each number, we are putting that many counters in ten frames.  Then we are figuring out the parts that make up each number (such as one set of 10 plus 5 leftover ones equal 15).  Please look over your child’s math page each night and continue to practice this skill at home.

Writing Workshop: We wrote about what we did over spring break. We also reviewed opinion writing.  We are working on adding details to our writing.  Our sentence writing is getting better every day!  Continue to practice writing sentences at home.

Friday Note 3-10-17

Friday Note - 3/10/17

Events of the Week: Our theme was weather.  We spent the week learning about different types of weather.  The student’s that earned their 3rd quarter reading journey enjoyed going to different classrooms today to read. We also finished up all third quarter assessments. The class did great on sight words! Only three students did not score proficient.

Math: We worked in math centers to review addition and subtraction.  During this time I pulled small groups to work on these skills.  Please continue to work on these skills at home since switching between the two is often difficult in kindergarten.  Remind your child to pay extra close attention to the + and to know which operation they need to use.

Language Workshop: Each day we focused on a different type of weather.  We read different informational books as well as fiction books about weather.
Writing Workshop: We wrote an opinion piece about our favorite kind of weather. Please look over your child’s writing and continue to practice at home.
Reading Workshop: While working with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that students are struggling when they get to an unknown word.  We are working hard on trying out the different reading strategies.  Many students are having a hard time with saying the letter sounds and then blending the sounds together.  When reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell your child a work he or she is stuck on. Instead ask them what strategy they could use. This will help them become independent readers.
Word Study: We practiced making –at words such as cat, hat, bat, that and flat on our whiteboards.

Important Dates:

·         March 13-17:  No School - Spring Break!
·         March 20-14:  PTA Penny Wars

  • March 28 & 30:  Spring Conferences
  • April 7: Day in K (for incoming kindergarten students 9-10:30)
  • April 25th- Make a Wish night (be watching for more information)

Friday Note

Friday Note - 3/03/17

Events of the Week: We celebrated Dr. Seuss.  We had a lot of fun dressing up during the week!  Our sight words for the week  was “not”.  We were also busy with third quarter assessments.

Math: In math we completed our subtraction unit and assessed on this skill.  Please continue to work if your child did not score proficient on the assessment.  I will reassess this skill next week.  We also began reviewing numbers to 20.

Language Workshop: We read several Dr. Seuss books, including The Cat in the Hat, The Sleep Book, Wacky Wednesday, Green Eggs and Ham, and more.  We did fun activities with the books, including making and eating green eggs and ham.  Ask your child which Dr. Seuss book is his or her favorite.
Writing Workshop: We practiced writing an opinion piece using a graphic organizer to help us organize our thoughts.  An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or more).  The first sentence states an opinion (I like P.E.).  The next two (or more) sentences give reasons why. The students each wrote an opinion piece about inside or outside recess.
Reading Workshop: While working with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that students are struggling when they get to an unknown word.  We are working hard on trying out the different reading strategies.  Many students are having a hard with saying the letter sounds and then blending the sounds together.  When reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell your child a work he or she is stuck on.  Please help your child figure out the word by using the various reading strategies.  I sent home the reading strategies poster in January. Here is a picture in case you need it:
Word Study: We enjoyed finding the silly rhyming words in the Dr. Seuss books.  We reviewed syllables, phoneme segmenting and blending, and ending sounds.  We also learned about opposites.
