Friday Note April 21, 2017

Friday Note: April 21, 2017
Events of the Week: This week we started an Author Study on Laura Numeroff.

·          Language Workshop: We read several if you give books (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Dog a Donut, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, If You give a Moose a Muffin, and If you Give a Pig a Pancake).  We identified the characters and setting and practiced retelling the stories.
·          Writing Workshop: We introduced series of events writing.  We spent the week sequencing events in the right order and discussing that for our writing to make sense it has to be written in the correct order.

  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am beginning to call each student up to read with them independently to determine their end of year reading level.

  • Word Study: We spent the week practicing correctly forming letters.

  • Math: We began a unit on solid figures (cylinder, cone, cube, and sphere).  The students enjoyed learning about these new shapes and finding them in our classroom.

Important Dates:

·         April 25 - Make a Wish night (at the high school ball fields)
·         April 26 - Kindergarten Field Trip
·        April 27 & 28 - Kindergarten Screening (K students will have school)
·        May 16th- Last Day of School. We will dismiss at 11:00. (Breakfast will be served, Lunch will not be served

Have a great weekend!

Thursday Note

Thursday Note: April 13, 2017
NO SCHOOL TOMORROW!
Events of the Week: This week our unit was on animals and their babies.  We talked about various animal mommies and their babies and discussed ways in which animal parents care for their young- just like our mommies and daddies care for us!
  • Math: We finished a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19.  Each day we practiced breaking the numbers down into a set of 10 and leftover ones.
  • Language Workshop: We read several books about animals and their young.  We also played games to match animal babies to their parents.
  • Writing Workshop: This week worked on writing about our opinion. We told if we prefered inside or outside recess. We are working hard to remember capital letters, finger spaces, and ending marks.

  • Reading Workshop:  We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books.  I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.
  • Word Study: We focused on writing the entire alphabet, with each letter formed correctly.  This is a skill that we will be assessed on the 4th quarter progress report.  Please practice at home if your child is not able to write the alphabet neatly.
