Friday Note 1/30/15

This Week:  We started off the week by celebrating the 101st day with a Dalmatian Celebration.  In math we started learning about subtraction.  We began a research and writing project over walruses.  Our sight word this week was “are”.

·         Language Workshop— We spent the week researching walruses.  We read a variety of books and used many resources to help us find facts.  As we gathered information on walruses, we wrote a list of facts about them.  Next week, we’ll write an informational paper as a class about walruses.
·          Writing Workshop—We continued working on writing complete sentences.  We practiced looking at a picture and writing about it.
·         Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups or individual students to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
·         Word Study— We practiced segmenting and blending phonemes.  We are learning to pronounce the beginning, middle and ending sound in words then blend them back together (ex: /j/ /e/ /t/ = jet).

o   Feb. 13: Valentine’s Party
o   Feb. 16: No School
o   Feb 9-12- Cheer Clinic practice until 5:00pm

Library Books
Remember to take care of the library books while they are at your house!  A good idea is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being read.  Library books are due back each Thursday, so your child can check out a new book.

February Lunch Menu
There is an error on our February lunch menu. The printed dates for the last 2 days of February are incorrect. The dates show as “22 & 23” and should be “26 & 27”. The menu items are correct and the days still line up in terms of days of the week (Thursday & Friday).

Thank you for attending our P.E. performance last night!

Next Week:
  • We will continue our class research project about walruses.
  • We will continue our unit on subtraction.
  • Our sight word will be “they”.
  • We will practice building and writing sight words.

Have a great weekend!!

What do the teachers do on Fridays after the students go home???

Every Friday Clever students are dismissed early to allow time for teacher collaboration.  After students leave for the day, district faculty assembles together to learn and work to better the education of our students.  Teachers have learned new ways to implement technology, new teaching strategies, and how to better serve our students.
The Kindergarten team has focused on letter identification since the beginning of the year.  Each teacher gathered data during the first few weeks of school.  At that time, 8 kindergarten students (9%) were able to identify all upper and lower case letters.  The kindergarten teachers collaborated with other members of our team, which includes our preschool teacher, a Parents as Teachers Home Educator, a Speech Therapist, and reading specialists, on ways to help our students learn their letters.  After two quarters of instruction we are happy to report 63 students (71%) can identify all their letters!  An additional 11 students (12%) are very close to meeting our goal!  Our class had only one student in August who could identify all 52 letters, but at the December break we had 12 students who reached our goal!  What wonderful improvement!
The kindergarten team will be focusing on student reading in the coming quarters!  Keep reading at home to help your child reach proficiency in their reading!
