Friday Note: April 17,
2015
Don’t
forget- Art Night is tonight! (5:30-8:30)
Events of the Week: This week our
unit was on animals and their babies. We
talked about various animal mommies and their babies and discussed ways in
which animal parents care for their young- just like our mommies and daddies
care for us!
- Language Workshop: We read several books
about animals and their young. We
completed a book Mother, Mother Can you Find Me? to put in our
Reading Boxes for independent reading later.
- Writing Workshop: We reviewed opinion
writing. We began by doing a
pre-writing activity where each child lists his/her opinion and then gives
two reasons for this opinion. From
there, we transferred this writing to another paper for a final draft.
- Reading Workshop: Students are working
daily in Literacy Centers. While
students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to
focus on different reading skills.
During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills
they are learning during small groups and using their reading
strategies. I hope that you are
able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with
you at home.
- Word Study: We introduced
antonyms (opposites). Most
kindergarten students have a firm grasp of this concept already, but it
was fun to play games with opposites and talk about sets of opposites that
we had not thought about before.
- Math: We finished a unit on decomposing numbers 11-19. Each day we practiced breaking the
numbers down into a set of 10 and left over ones. Please look over your child’s math work
mats with them to support what we are learning in our classroom.
