Friday Note

FRIDAY NOTE 11/11/16

Events of the Week:

Math: We are learning about teen numbers. We know each teen number is a group of tens and leftover ones. This week we focused on finding, counting, and writing 13 and 14.

Our focus in reading this week was on folk tales.  Here’s what we did in each workshop:

  • Language Workshop: We focused on the book The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We focused on story elements, such as characters, settings, and major events.  We also practiced retelling the story by telling what happened in the beginning, the middle, and the end.  The students really enjoyed using the story pieces to retell.  We finished the week by reading other versions of the story.

  • Writing Workshop: We learned the sight word “to”.  We also introduced “Writing Journals”.  Journals are used for students to write about whatever they choose.

  • Reading Workshop: We introduced another center that will we use during Literacy Centers and continued to practice working independently. We reviewed the reading strategies that we already know ( use the picture for clues nd get your mouth ready for the first sound).  Please encourage your child to use these reading strategies when reading at home.

  • Word Study: Our letter for the week was “Ee”.  We learned that Ee is a vowel and can make a short sound and a long sound.

  • Content time: We talked about Election Day and what that meant. Each student got their own voter registration card and was able to vote on in an Election. We read Duck for President. Duck was running for president of the farm against the current president Farmer Brown.

Important Dates:
  • Nov. 22:  Kindergarten Share Feast
  • Nov. 23-Nov. 25:  Thanksgiving Break (No School)

All of Kindergarten will come together on Tuesday, November 22nd to celebrate the first Thanksgiving.  Please have your child bring in ONE INDIVIDUAL-SIZED favorite snack (Cheez-its, mini marshmallows, pretzels, M&M’s, etc.) before this day that we will combine together to make a Share Feast for all to enjoy. Thanks so much for your help!

FBLA would like to thank the students for raising approximately $500 towards care packages for our troops.  The army men are being displayed throughout the building and will go home on Friday, November 18th.
