Friday Note 2-24-17

Friday Note - 2/24/17

This Week: Our theme was nursery rhymes. Our sight word was “do”.

  • In math we continued to work on subtraction.  We are learning to separate from a group to find out how many are left over and write a number sentence to represent the problem.

  • Language Workshop— We read many different nursery rhymes.  We also made Jack and Jill and Hey Diddle Diddle books to add to our book books.
  • Writing Workshop— We practiced writing an opinion piece together as a class.  An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or more).  The first sentence states an opinion (P.E. is my favorite special class).  The next two sentences give reasons why.  The first time as class we wrote about our favorite special class.  Later in the week students wrote on on their own. The first day they wrote their opinion. THe second day they wrote a reason. The third day they wrote another reason why that is their favorite special class.  Please have your child read their writing to you.  We also completed a sentence assessment this week.  Please look over this with your child and encourage your child to work on writing at home.  Remember, I will be looking for your child to be forming letters correctly, using spaces, writing first and last name correctly, writing more sounds they are hearing in words and writing a complete sentence on 3rd quarter Progress Reports next month.
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study— We focused on the middle vowel sounds in words.

Friday Note 2-17-17

Friday Note - 2/17/17

This Week:  In math we began our unit on subtraction. We learned how to separate groups and how to compare two groups by telling how many more objects are in one group than the other group. This is a difficult concept for some kindergarteners to master as they want to count the amount in each group rather than determining the difference between the groups. * Gregtangmath.com has some fun games to practice these skills. This is a free resource. We played a few games in class and the student really enjoyed them.
Our theme was universe. Our sight word this week was “of”. Friday  was Jump Rope for Heart.  Thank you to all who donated to the American Heart Association.

  • Language Workshop— We studied the universe.  We asked questions and read books about the sun, moon, Earth, and stars.  Then we listed key details and new vocabulary words from each book.  The students really enjoyed learning about this topic.
  • Writing Workshop—We practiced writing complete sentences in our journals.  We are working with students individually to look at their writing and to set goals for their writing, such as using a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence.  Please encourage your child to write at home.
  • Word Study— We practiced identifying ending sounds.
Classroom Needs:
We are running low on baby wipes (we use these to clean our breakfast trays). Any donations are greatly appreciated.

Survey for PAT

https://Parentsasteachers

POSSIBLE NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY!
One of the many things our Early Childhood Staff feel fortunate to have is a school board and administration who value early childhood education. NOT EVERY SCHOOL CAN SAY THAT! We've had a long tradition of that support here at Clever R-V that began with past superintendent, Richard L. Henson. Thankfully, our present superintendent, Steve Carvajal, continues the tradition.
Earlier this winter Mr. Carvajal approached us with a plan to research the possibility to expand school services to include a daycare center on our campus. We realize there are other daycare opportunities in the community where many families are satisfied and content. We also know, for many families, finding daycare is a struggle as providers are not abundant in our area and often turn families away due to capacity restrictions. In other words, there are plenty of children to go around! As our community grows, our families’ needs are greater than available opportunities. Our school district is working to find a way try to meet needs so ALL children have the opportunity to have care provided in a safe, appropriate, nurturing environment.
As we research our options, we need your input. Please take a moment to answer and return the following survey at your earliest convenience. Simply click on the link below and input your answers. Thank you for your support as we work to provide options for our growing community. We'll keep you updated as this possibility develops.

Fun Raiser --Update 2-03-2017

As of this morning, the students have collected:
376 bottles of shampoo/conditioner
754 pairs of socks
$483.50
317 tubes of toothpaste
620 toothbrushes
483 cans of food

I am so proud of the students because they did all the work from deciding who they wanted to help, thinking of the spirit week idea, creating the themes for each day, talking to the students to promote it, making the flyers, collecting and counting the items.  I think they were really able to see how they can make a difference in their community.
