Friday Note 2-3-17

Friday Note - 2/03/17
Events This Week:
  • In math we continued our unit on addition.  This week we focused on making the numbers 6-10 in different ways and then writing the number sentences.  Please look carefully at the math papers your child is bringing home.

  • Language Workshop— We started our project based learning unit on animal research.  The students chose animals that they wanted to learn more about, and I placed the students in groups of 2 or 3.  The groups started researching their animals.  The groups started writing down facts about their animals.  We will continue this fun project next week.
  • Writing Workshop— We continued working on writing complete sentences.  We practiced looking at a picture and writing about it.
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
  • Word Study— We did a lot of blending and segmenting words.  For example, I gave students a word like “cat”, and they had to tell me the sounds they hear in the word, c-a-t.  We played several games and activities to practice this skill.

Book Bags
Keep reading and returning the book bags every Friday.  Also, please encourage your child to read these books several times before returning them.  It would be best if you are reading the books each night.  Please take care of these books while they are at your house.
Sight Words—Keep practicing!
I   is   like   see   my   a   the   be   it   he   she   they

Library Books
Remember to take care of the library books while they are at your house!  A good idea is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being read.  Library books are due back each Thursday so your child can check out a new book.
Next Week:
  • We will continue our group research projects.
  • We will continue our unit on addition.
  • Our sight word will be “in”.
  • We will continue working on blending and segmenting each sound in simple words.
Have a great weekend!!
Mrs. Wenger
