Friday Note

  FRIDAY NOTE - 2/13/15

This Week: In math we continued to work on addition. We learned the different ways to make a number. (1 + 4 = 5 and 2 + 3 = 5). Our theme was universe. Our sight word this week was “in”.  Friday was our Valentines party. Thanks to all of the parents who sent in items and/or came to help out with our party.  The kids had a great time showing off their Valentine boxes and sharing Valentine cards with their classmates.

·        Language Workshop— We studied the universe. We asked questions and read books about the sun, moon, Earth, and stars.
·        Writing Workshop—We practiced writing complete sentences about things we see in the sky. Our sentences are getting much better.  Please encourage your child to write at home.
·        Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
·        Word Study— We practiced identifying ending sounds.
Important Dates:

oFeb 13:   K-4 Little Cheer Performance at JV half-time
oFeb. 16: No School -  President’s Day
oFeb. 26: spring & class pictures.
oFeb. 26: Cox Care Mobile

Reading Challenge
Keep reading and returning the book bags each Friday.  Also, please encourage your child to read these books several times before returning them.  It would be best if you are reading the books each night.

The Character word for February is TOLERANCE.
Ask your child what it means.
(Accepting Other’s Differences)

Sight Words—Keep practicing!
I   is   like   see   my   a   the   be   have   it   he   she
to   can   with   go   we   me   you   and   are   they in

It might be a good idea to mix these up and practice out of order. Several students are able to just recite them in order but unable to read them alone.

Snacks:
Our classroom is running low on snacks. Donations are greatly appreciated.

Library Books
Remember to take care of the library books while they are at your house!  A good idea is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being read.  Library books are due back each Thursday, so your child can check out a new book.

          Next Week:
·         We will learn about nursery rhymes.
·         We will continue to practice different ways of making numbers.
·         Our sight word will be “of”.
·         We practice with the “ch” and “sh” sounds.

Have a Great Weekend!!

Mrs. Wenger
