FRIDAY NOTE - 2/12/15
This Week: We continued working on our shared research and
writing project over walruses. We did a
“blubber” experiment where students got to experience how walruses feel when
swimming in ice water. Ask them about
it, they were very excited! Our sight word this week was “they”.
·
Math- We continued to work on subtraction. We
learned about the different strategies you can use to solve a subtraction
problem (use fingers, counters, draw dots, number line, tens frame, put smaller
number in your head and count up). We
will continue to learn about addition and subtraction in the coming weeks.
·
Language
Workshop— We did some additional
research on walruses. We wrote a list of key details we learned after reading
each book. We also enjoyed watching video clips of walruses.
·
Writing
Workshop—As a class, we used the seal facts to write a short informational story.
Please read it with your child.
I’m sure he/she will have plenty more facts to add to it! J The boys and girls also did some informational writing on
their own this week. I was very proud of
them.
·
Reading
Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers. While students are working independently, I
am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills. During independent reading time, students are
practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their
reading strategies. I hope that you are
able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you
at home.
·
Word
Study— We did a lot of blending and segmenting words. For example, I gave students a word like CAT,
and they had to tell me the sounds they hear in the word, C-A-T. We played several games and activities to
practice this skill.

A good idea
is to keep the library book in your child’s backpack when it is not being

new book.
