Friday Note 9-18-15

Friday Note 9-18-15

Events of the Week:

Math:  We finished up our unit on positional words and then started our unit on measurement.  We are learning to compare objects by length.  Next week we will work on comparing by height, capacity, and weight.

Language Workshop:  This week we read Who Said Red? and began our focus on identifying colors and color words.  We introduced the colors red, green, blue, and yellow.  We started writing in our reading logs this week.  Each day we focused on one color, drew objects that are that color, and then labeled the picture.  The students worked really hard on this new activity.

Reading Workshop:  We continued our unit over reading routines.  This week we learned that the pictures in a book help tell the story and that the pictures match the words.  We also introduced our book boxes. Students are able to look at the books they keep in their box during rest time.

Writing Workshop:  Since we have now finished learning about our classmates by playing the Name Game, we focused on writing our names correctly.  When practicing at home, please make sure the first letter is capitalized and the rest are lowercase.  *Name homework is coming home today.  Please read the directions carefully!  The students also sorted letters to determine which letters are in their name and which letters are not.

Word Study:  Our sight word for this week was “my”.  The letters “Nn” and “Pp” were our letters of the week.  We worked on identifying each letter, writing it correctly, and saying its sound.

Important Dates:
·        Oct. 12—Columbus Day—No School
·        Oct. 19-22— Parent/Teacher Conferences

Thanks so much to the families who came to Grandparent’s Day! It was great to meet these special people.

We are working on reciting our phone numbers, addresses, and birthdays.  Please practice with your child at home on these.   These will be on the progress report when I assess your child in October.

The character word for September is RESPECT!
Ask your child what it means.
(Treating others the way you want to be treated.)
