Friday Note - 3/10/17
Events
of the Week:
Our theme
was weather. We spent the week learning
about different types of weather. The
student’s that earned their 3rd quarter reading journey enjoyed going
to different classrooms today to read. We also finished up all third quarter
assessments. The class did great on sight words! Only three students did not
score proficient.
Math:
We worked in math centers to review addition and
subtraction. During this time I pulled
small groups to work on these skills. Please
continue to work on these skills at home since switching between the two is
often difficult in kindergarten. Remind your
child to pay extra close attention to the + and – to know which
operation they need to use.
Language
Workshop: Each day we focused on a different type of
weather. We read different informational
books as well as fiction books about weather.
Writing Workshop: We
wrote an opinion piece about our favorite kind of weather. Please look over
your child’s writing and continue to practice at home.
Reading Workshop: While working
with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that students are struggling
when they get to an unknown word. We are working hard on trying out the
different reading strategies. Many students are having a hard time with
saying the letter sounds and then blending the sounds together. When
reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell your child a work he
or she is stuck on. Instead ask them what strategy they could use. This will
help them become independent readers.
Word Study: We practiced making –at
words such as cat, hat, bat, that and flat on our whiteboards.
