Friday Note 3-24-17

Friday Note - 3/24/17

Events of the Week: Our theme was spring.  We spent the week learning about how the season affects plants, animals and people.

Math: We started a new unit called Composing Numbers 11 to 19.  For each number, we are putting that many counters in ten frames.  Then we are figuring out the parts that make up each number (such as one set of 10 plus 5 leftover ones equal 15).  Please look over your child’s math page each night and continue to practice this skill at home.

Language Workshop: This week we read informational books about spring.  The students wrote about key details they learned from the books.  We discussed the changes we are seeing outside.  We learned about how the weather changes in spring and how the behavior of animals and people change as well.

Writing Workshop: We wrote about what we did over spring break. We also reviewed opinion writing.  We are working on adding details to our writing.  Our sentence writing is getting better every day!  Continue to practice writing sentences at home.

Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.

Word Study: Each day we practiced making words.  Please work with your child on the making words activities they brought home this week.  Be sure to ask them which sound is changing as they make the new word ( beginning, middle, or end).

Reading Challenge
Our last reading challenge of the year has started. Please take a few moments each night to read with your child.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together, but more importantly, it sends the message that reading and school are important.  Don’t forget: you can use the books from their book bags towards the challenge.  The Reading Challenge is due Thursday, May 11th.  Happy Reading!

Next Week:
  • We will be NWEA testing in the computer lab Monday-Thursday.  Please make sure your child eats a good breakfast each morning and arrives at school on time.
  • We will learn about plants.
  • We will finish our unit in math on composing numbers.
  • Our sight words will be “was”.
  • We are having a goat visit our class for show and tell. PLEASE let me know before Friday if your child has any goat allergies I would need to be aware of.

Have a great weekend!!
Mrs. Wenger
